The HBCR Workgroup offers several trainings. Please contact us to discuss how we can best work with your needs in terms of scheduling, cost and other details.
Focus Group Training:
This two-day interactive training includes: the various purposes for focus groups; how to develop questions; logistical preparations & planning; how to run focus groups; and how to collect, score, analyze, and summarize focus group data.
Motivational Interviewing (MI) Training:
This two-day interactive MI training includes:The theoretical basis; learning how to listen; MI counseling strategies; identifying when a client is ready for a change plan; video components; time to practice; examples; application in a clinical setting (if appropriate); and cultural considerations.
Transtheoretical Model (TTM) of Behavior Change Training:
This one- or two-day training will cover: the TTM components; measuring the TTM components; how to intervene using the TTM in a clinic setting, in a group setting, and in large populations; and examples of TTM applications. The second day would include developing a TTM based program/intervention specific for your needs.
Data Analysis Training:
This one- or two-day training (depending on your need) is an applied approach and focuses on how to: set up data sets; clean data; decide which analysis technique to use; running data analyses; interpreting outputs; and writing results sections based on analyses. We can provide data sets and examples but would welcome to work with your data to maximize the usefulness of this training for your organization.
Software: SPSS or Excel
Analysis techniques: Descriptives, Frequencies, Correlation, T-test, Chi-Square, ANOVA, ANCOVA, MANOVA, MANCOVA, Linear Regression, Logistic Regression, (Structural Equation Modeling upon request).
Grant Writing Training:
This one-day training addresses: Idea generation; identifying a grant opportunity; how to prepare for a grant; the key components of a grant proposal; what reviewers are looking for; putting together an application; grantsmanship; putting together your research team; budgeting; and logistics.
The focus can be tailored to NIH grants or foundation grants.
Scientific/Academic Paper Writing and Publishing Training:
This one-day training includes: developing your idea; how to write using the hourglass method; writing the abstract, introduction, methods, results, and discussion; referencing; how to choose a journal; and the submission process. We will provide examples or can incorporate your paper topic.
SOPLAY (System for Observing Play and Leisure Activity in Youth) and SOFIT (System for Observing Fitness Instruction Time):
These two day trainings will train participants in observing physical activity in structured class settings (SOFIT) or in open areas such as playgrounds (SOPLAY). Trainings include theory, concepts and definitions, step-by-step how-to, video practice, field practice, and reliability.
Costs: generally costs of the HBCR Workgroup trainings are $1,000/day, however the costs are dependent on number of people to be trained and training scope.
